(WGN-AM)- One person died and three people were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries following a three-vehicle crash on Illinois Highway 83 near Palos Park, a fire official said.
The crash, which happened about 8:20 a.m. about a half-mile west of 104th Avenue on Route 83, involved an SUV and a pickup truck that flipped over, as well as a car, said Palos Fire Protection District Capt. Chip Adams. Cook County Sheriff's Police closed Route 83 for the investigation Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The crash involved a head-on collision, said Sheriff's police spokeswoman Lisa Gordon, who also confirmed that one person died following the crash.
All four victims were initially considered "red," or in serious to critical condition, when taken to area hospitals, Adams said.
One person was taken by Loyola Lifestar helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, one to Palos Community Hospital and two to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Adams said.
Ambulances from the Lemont Fire Protection District and the Palos Heights Fire Department also responded to the scene, and Orland Park and Crestwood firefighters staffed Palos Fire Protection stations during the crash response, Adams said.
