A woman and Virginia State trooper were shot in two separate incidents that occurred about 20 minutes apart.  Police say Franklin County deputy Jonathan Ashley Agee, age 32 of Boones Mill, shot his ex-wife, Jennifer Louise Agee, at the Sheetz on Williamson Road in Roanoke.  State police say Agee later wounded a Virginia State Police sergeant before being shot multiple times by Virginia State Police at the Ironto exit of Interstate 81 inMontgomery County.

Sheetz Shooting

Roanoke City Police chief, Chris Perkins, told reporters Agee was following his wife to the Sheetz at the corner of Williamson and Orange Ave.  Perkins said Agee shot his ex-wife multiple times in the parking lot of the convenience store.  He confirmed that there was a child with her who was unharmed but he would not elaborate.  Police say Jennifer Agee was shot with some sort of rifle.

Police in the area alerted to the shooting and were looking out for the suspect's Franklin County Sheriff's department vehicle.  Because so many troopers were on the roads because of the Memorial Day weekend traffic, state police say Agee's vehicle was spotted quickly.

Trooper and Suspect Shot on Interstate 81

Sgt. Matt Brannock was eastbound on Route 460 when he spotted Agee's car heading westbound on Rt. 460. According to state police, when Brannock turned around to get behind the deputy's car, Agee activated his lights and sirens.  Police say he continued west on Rt. 460 and eventually got onto Interstate 81.  Deputy Agee stopped about a mile from the Exit 128 Ironto exit.  State police say Agee fired at Brannock and shot the sergeant in the upper leg.  Police say Brannock took cover and Agee took off.

State police eventually stopped Agee at the Exit 128 Ironto exit.  Two troopers shot Agee multiple times.  Both Sgt. Brannock and Deputy Agee were taken to the hospital.  Brannock is expected survive the injuries.

Agee's injuries are life-threatening, according to state police.  The two state troopers involved in the shooting of Agee have been placed on administrative leave.  This is standard procedure.

Franklin County's Response to Deputy-Involved Shootings

Franklin County Sheriff Ewell Hunt released a statement saying Agee has been suspended without pay and is being charged with unauthorized use of a Franklin County police vehicle.  Agee has been employed with the sheriff's office since April 2004.

“We are shocked and saddened by today’s tragic events. We ask that you keep the families of all involved in your prayers," said Hunt.
