EXPO: Be aware that Shanghai Expo 2010, a world's fair, opens in Shanghai on May 1 and will run through October. Shanghai will be quite crowded this summer if you visit. An estimated 70 million people — almost all Chinese — are expected.
TRIP DETAILS:
Several tour companies offer inexpensive trips to China. Ellen Creager anonymously tested one tour through Blaine, Wash.-based China Spree on March 23-April 3. The cost was $1,499, but with a $500 "hot deal" discount, it was $999 for 12 days — including airfare, hotels, meals, tours and flights within China. She paid an additional $400 single supplement, $130 for a Chinese visa, $120 for travel insurance, plus about $350 airfare between Detroit and San Francisco.
Creager's particular trip, "China Delights" had a few downsides. It went only to Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou and missed the Xian Warriors, one of China's most famous sights, and it didn't go to Tibet or the Yangtze River. Other itineraries include these sights.
Hotels were supposed to be modest, but they were far more upscale than expected. The planning, communication and delivery of the tour was without problems.
A 12-day "China Delights" tour from China Spree in June is $1,399 after a $500 bonus discount.
