The newest ship on the seas is made its Miami debut as the Norwegian Getaway had a gala event at PortMiami featuring Pitbull and the ship's godmothers, the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders.
"She's running like a well-oiled machine," said Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan. "We couldn't wait to have her here to her new year-round home in Miami. She is after all Miami's ultimite ship."
The 3,969-passenger vessel arrived in South Florida port on Thursday ahead of the Feb. 7 christening after spending a week in New York as the transformed Bud Light Hotel during the Super Bowl. The ship then began year-round, 7-night Caribbean cruises on Saturday, and will be based out of the South Florida port for at least the next three years.
It's the third big ship to call PortMiami home year-round recently with the debut of the MSC Divina and Carnival Breeze last year.
The Getaway is a sister ship to the New York-based Norwegian Breakaway, and features a striking hull design by David Le Batard, also known as "LEBO" with a mermaid holding the sun.
"David did a great job capturing the Miami spirit," Sheehan said.
The ship is filled with unique restaurants and activities designed to embrace its homeport and other features to make it stand out in the crowded cruise market.
Some of the more notable assets include:
-- An Ice Bar, kept at 17-degrees Fahrenheit featuring sculptures reminiscent of Ocean Drive in South Beach
-- The Grammy Experience at sea, which will at times feature live performances by past Grammy winners and nominees and display notable music-industry features.
-- The Illusionarium, which is a dining and entertainment experience featuring magic.
-- Muscial productions "Burn the Floor" and "Legally Blonde."
The ship will also take a page out of Disney Cruise Line's playbook and launch fireworks at sea on each cruise.
The ship's main gathering place, like its sister ship is 678 Ocean Place and The Waterfront, which is an interconnected indoor and outdoor venue on three decks (6,7 and 8).
There's 26 dining venues with its best foot forward coming from chef Geoffrey Zakarian, offering Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian; Ocean Blue on the Waterfront and The Raw Bar.
Also on board will be new Nickelodeon-themed spaces and activities for kids.
