Run the vanishing rapids

In addition to Victoria Falls, Africa's Zambezi River is known for its challenging whitewater. An agreement by the governments of Zambia and Zimbabwe to build two dams downriver from the falls would flood the Batoka Gorge below the falls, wiping out that whitewater. Adventure tour company ROAM has put together a new trip that will give whitewater rafters the opportunity to tackle the river before it's too late. The Zambezi River Explorer is scheduled for just two dates in 20014: Sept. 27-Oct. 8 and Oct. 8-19. It begins with two days at Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge for game drives and river and walking safaris. Next is a three-day canoeing safari on the Upper Zambezi, followed by the five-day rafting adventure through Batoka Gorge, which is aimed at intermediate to advanced whitewater rafters. Cost of the trip is $4,995 per person double occupancy. Info: 888-639-1114,
