A Pennsylvania man was charged with the armed carjacking of a taxi driver in Ocean City Saturday, police said.
Police said Ian Edward Keim, 36, of Neville, Penn., got into a taxi at 49th Street in the beach destination at around 6:15 p.m. He then grabbed the taxi driver by the throat and threatened him with a knife, police said.
The taxi driver, who was not identified, stopped the taxi at 91st Street and got out while Keim climbed into the driver's seat and drove away, police said. An off-duty officer witnessed the incident and picked up the taxi driver, and the two followed the taxi as it traveled north on Coastal Highway.
Near 118th Street and Assawoman Drive, Keim abandoned the taxi and fled on foot toward the beach, where he was arrested in the surf, police said. He was charged with armed robbery and armed carjacking and was being held on $250,000 bond in the Worchester County jail on Tuesday. No attorney was listed for him in court records.
