Tall ship visit is just one thing to do in Ocean City before summer ends

There's still time to fit in a few events in Ocean City before the end of the summer, including something new this year: the OC Tall Ship Event, which takes place Aug. 21 to Sept. 2 at Bayside Pier.

A replica of a 16th century Spanish galleon tall ship will be docked between 3rd and 4th Street, giving visitors the chance to take a historic tours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Andalucia Galleon ship is modeled after the vessels Spain used to explore the new world centuries ago and features six decks and three masts with six sails. It has a crew of about 25 Spanish sailors.

"This is the first time a ship of this size has come to Ocean City," said Bryan Lilley, president of the National Air, Sea and Space Foundation, the sponsor of next week's event.  which is sponsoring the visit. "We hope visitors are going to enjoy this historic opportunity to step back in time and meet the crew who travel the world to educate guests about the ship and the history of Spanish exploration."

Lilley said it's the second visit promoted by the foundation. The first was in Port Canaveral in May and that event attracted more than 30,000 people.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $11 for kids ages six to 11 and free for children younger than six. For more details, go to www.tallshipevent.com.
