If you're packing for the Memorial Day weekend in Ocean City, leave the laser pointer at home - as usual - and don't even think about buying another.

On Monday, the city council voted unanimously to ban the sale of laser pointers in Ocean City, including the boardwalk. The ordinance also bans the sale of "assisted-opening" knives or switchblades. Both bans are effective immediately.

Not only can you not purchase the laser pointers, but the ban forbids having them in your possession when on public property. The resort already prohibits possession of laser pointers by minors as well as shining pointers on public or private property or directly or indirectly at another person or animal.

The town's police department said they have had nearly 1,000 calls related to laser pointers in the last three years. Police officials are also concerned that they are seeing more knives in interactions within the town's community.

Any person found violating the laser pointer ban could face a misdemeanor charge and subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. Violations for knives include a similar fine but could carry jail time of up to six months.
