GET UP EARLY: You know that the light is beautiful around sunset. It's just as beautiful around sunrise, and most places are less crowded then. If you just creep to your hotel room balcony (or unzip your tent), your odds are good. If you stroll out on the pier at Huntington Beach (as I did here), they're better. Also, this is the hour when you can give photography your full attention without needing to negotiate with your non-photographer fellow travelers.
