Lemuel Manning Ironmonger
Born in the Dare section of York County, sailor and farmer Lemuel Manning Ironmonger was an apprentice in Portsmouth when he enlisted in the militia group that later became Co. A of the 6th Virginia Infantry. He was taken prisoner at Spotsylvania Courthouse in 1864 and survived the war to become a farmer and ship painter. He was buried in Providence Methodist Church in Dare.
