Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. The storied liner struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. In all, 1500 people died. Men were ordered to stand back while lifeboats were loaded. Seventy percent of women and children survived. Only 20 percent of the men escaped alive.
Shipwrecks and maritime disasters always seem to captivate our imagination but none has stood the test of time like the ill-fated Titanic, the luxury liner that sank on her maiden voyage in April of 1912.
There is nothing more evocative than looking at or touching an object from, or meeting someone associated with, a dramatic historical event. Simply said, it puts you there.
