Military discounts for Walt Disney World
What's the deal: Orlando, Fla., is a great vacation spot for members of the U.S. military, thanks to a number of discount offers. These discounts allow active military members to go on vacation without breaking the bank, and many deals are also available for retired military.
Active and retired service members or their spouses can purchase up to six four-day military promotional tickets to Walt Disney World starting at $138 each.
Also at Walt Disney World is the Shades of Green Resort, an Armed Forces Recreation Center owned by the Department of Defense that offers military families the amenities of a resort at an affordable rate. When we checked for July, we found rates as low as $95 per night. (888-593-2242; shadesofgreen.org.)
What are the savings: Ticket savings are about 50 percent. As a price comparison, individual park hopper tickets cost $120 for one day, $287 for three days and $298 for four days.
What's the catch: For the rate listed above, tickets must be purchased by Sept. 28 for use by Oct. 1, and these discounted tickets must be purchased through a U.S. military-base ticket office. In addition, military members can save 40 percent off rooms at selected Disney World hotels and resorts.
Tip: Other Orlando attractions also offer discounts, including SeaWorld Orlando, where active-duty military can receive free admission for themselves and up to three dependents. The offer, which is valid through Dec. 31, can also be used at Busch Gardens, Adventure Island or Water Country USA in Tampa, SeaWorld in San Diego or San Antonio, or Sesame Place in Pennsylvania. However, you can take advantage of the offer at only one of the parks per year. Visit http://www.herosalute.com for details.
