Go here: Settled in 1705, Lambertville is nestled in the Delaware River Valley. New Jersey's longest park, the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, runs through Lambertville and inspires dedicated preservation of its rural beauty. Known as the "Antique Capital of New Jersey," the town is filled with history both in and out its stores. This riverside hamlet has antiques shops, a microbrewery, a progressive ballet troupe and a symphony. Visitors can enjoy them and also stroll over a bridge into New Hope, Pa., and upriver to Stockton, N.J.

Stay here: The Lambertville House, 32 Bridge St., 888-867-8859. Located in the midst of the shopping area, this hotel offers the same old-fashioned feel within its walls that is found about the town. Many of the rooms have fireplaces or balconies, but a favorite is the carriage-house king room. Rates start at about $200.

Eat here: The Lambertville Station Restaurant, 11 Bridge St., 609-397-8300. With a bar floor, a view of the canal and the town, this retired railroad station is the place to go for great food and scenery. Try the coconut bread, or treat an adventurous palate to the "wild game" menu between the months of January and March.

Another favorite is Anton's At the Swan, 43 S. Main St., 609-397-1960. This romantic restaurant showcases seasonal ingredients prepared by chef/owner Chris Connors. Special wine dinners are offered monthly, highlighting vintages from around the world.

Don't miss this: The Roxey Ballet, 243 N. Union St., 609-397-7616. Visit this local ballet company for performances ranging from Shakespeare-inspired dances to children's shows.

Get here: Lambertville is about 140 miles from Baltimore, about a three-hour drive. Follow Interstate 95 north and take the first exit in New Jersey, Exit 1 at Route 29. Take Route 29 north about 12 miles. Make a left onto Bridge Street at the first traffic light.
