St. Barts( Robert Cross, Chicago Tribune / September 20, 2002 )
Distance from Baltimore: 1,682 miles, about a nine-hour flight (with stops)
Why it's hot: With more than 20 beaches on St. Barts, or Saint Barthelemy as the island in the French West Indies is officially known, visitors will easily find space to relax on at least one of them. Anse de Grand Cul-de-Sac is known for its watersports, Baie de St-Jean is known for its beachside restaurants, and Anse des Flamands is known for the striking scenery. For those looking for more active adventures, there are guided tours available for scuba diving or venture underwater in a semi-submersible vessel in Gustavia Harbor for a unique look at the marine life. Get up close to barracudas, sting rays, green sea turtles, and more.
Don't miss: Gustavia, above, the capital of St. Barts. Stroll down the boisterous streets, taking in the Swedish era architecture and colonial-style houses or shopping at the designer boutiques. On the outskirts of town, take a moment to visit Fort Gustave, a historic fort built in 1787 that overlooks the port.
Information: For more details, visit the island's Tourism Committee.
