Distance from Baltimore: About 80 miles, less than a two-hour drive
Why it's cool: Winter activities. You might expect winter on the Eastern Shore to be slow and it is in places, but this resort is not one of them. With more than 400 rooms, it has the space and the appeal for both families and couples. Guests can enjoy cooking classes, scavenger hunts, roasting s'mores, a walk through the winter garden or a visit to the Sago Spa & Salon.
Don't miss: Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. The wildlife park offers bird watching and eagle surveys in winter. Visitors can take in the view from a new wildlife observation platform that stretches more than 200 feet into the river marshland. Two all-weather spotting scopes on the platform allow for up-close viewing of eagles, ospreys, herons, ducks, muskrats and other wetland wildlife.
