Distance from Baltimore: 4,788 miles, about a 12-hour flight (with stop)
Why it's hot: Relax on Hawaii's splendid beaches or enjoy the water through various water sports. Also, in winter, the humpback whales migrate to the waters surrounding Hawaii to mate and birth young, allowing visitors a glimpse into their magnificent lives. Stop by Waimea Canyon, a mile wide and 10 miles long, on Kauai for dazzling vistas. Tour the USS Arizona, a national shrine that honors American sacrifice. Golf on any of the 80 courses on six different islands. In typical Hawaiian fashion, attend an authentic luau. Expect grass skirts, painted face, fire dancers and traditional music that highlight the Polynesian culture and tradition.
Don't miss: Kilauea Volcano, on the southern tip of the Big Island. One of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea offers visitors the chance to see a volcano at work. After hiking through the vibrant rainforest, visitors can witness vents spewing steam, brand new land being created through lava, walk-through lava tubes and ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs.
