Distance from Baltimore: 2,650 miles, about a thirty-nine-and-a-half-hour drive (or five-hour flight to nearby Sacramento)
Why it's cool: Lake Tahoe is one of the countrys best sports for winter fun. Here you can try your hand at back-country or cross country skiing. If youre not into skiing, partake in human sled bowling by creating snow pins and riding into them on a sled. For something to do indoors, check out one of South Lake Tahoes studios and exhibiting galleries, or a local nightclub.
Don't miss: The South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, an indoor rink which has an NHL-size sheet of ice, snack bar, arcade and private party rooms.
Information: Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, Visitor Center California, 3066 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150; 530-544-5050 or www.tahoesouth.com.
