U.S. Virgin Islands( Ellen Creager, MCT / September 4, 2006 )
Distance from Baltimore: 1597 miles, about a six-hour flight
Why its hot: The three main islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John offer plenty to keep the family busy. Take in the natural beauty of the islands through guided kayak tours, hiking, snorkeling, or sailing through the delightful coves. Spend the day relaxing in the sun on one of the numerous beaches surrounded by crystal blue water, white sand, and coconut trees swaying in the gentle breezes. Explore the underwater wonders by diving the caves, sunken boat wrecks, or dive at night to see the magical world of nocturnal marine life.
Dont miss: Christiansted, one of two main towns on the island of Saint Croix. Within the town are several historical treasures to be explored. Fort Christiansvaern, a beautiful example of Danish colonial military architecture, first served as a fort and later a jail. Admission is only $2.
