St. Thomas, Virgin Islands( USVI Department of Tourism Photo / June 28, 2012 )
Distance from Baltimore: 1595 miles, about a 6½-hour flight
Why it's hot: Saint Thomas is bursting with opportunities for fun. The Skyride climbs 700 feet above the city to Paradise Point, offeringa spectacular view of the island. Magens Bay on the north side of the island features beautiful white beaches and trails for visitors to wander down as they enjoy the blooming foliage. Visit the nearby Magens Bay Arboretum to see over 200 species, including 20 native to the Virgin Islands. Blackbeard's Castle, located in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is open for tours and is a stunning example of Danish architecture. Originally built to protect the harbor, Blackbeards Castle is one of five National Historic Landmarks to be explored on the island.
Don't miss: The 99 Steps of Charlotte Amalie. The steps, of which there are actually 103, were built in the mid-1700s by Danish engineers. From the top of the steps, visitors will have a remarkable view of the city and of the Caribbean.
