Distance from Baltimore: 1,863 miles, about a six-hour flight
Why it's hot: Located on the eastern edge of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Riviera Maya includes Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel among its destinations. Sparkling white sandy beaches are the draw here, along with majestic ruins. Spend some time tanning or take advantage of the gorgeous water to parasail, scuba dive, snorkel or swim. Visit Rio Secreto, a natural underground river that offers an exceptional chance to take in the stalactites and stalagmites of the river. Stop by the Mayan Ruins of Tulum for a fascinating look into the past. Also check out Chichen Itza, an example of highly-detailed ancient Mayan architecture. Now deemed one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the site offers several intriguing ruins including the El Castillo Kukulkan Pyramid.
Don't miss: Tulum. The archaeological site located right along the coastline is considered to be one of the most beautiful places on the Riviera Maya. Visitors can explore archeological structures and go for a swim with a view of the temples. A popular destination is Xcaret, above, part nature theme park and part eco-friendly tourism resort. It is built near the archeaological site of the same name.
