Distance from Baltimore: About a 20-hour flight
Why it's hot: It's a dream destination for many travelers around the world. Its palm-fringed islands, gilded temples, spicy cuisine and racy nightlife helped draw 19 million visitors in 2011. Take a dip in Phuket, known for its beautiful beaches or sample street food in Chiang Mai or soak up the nightlife of Bangkok, the capital city. With Thailand's exotic allure also comes some seedy pockets, and visitors should be alert for scams, bad drivers and thieves, especially in areas with lots of tourists.
Don't miss: Hua Hin, about three hours outside of Bangkok. A popular getaway for both natives and tourists alike, the town - a favorite of the Thai royal family - offers a slower pace, cooler temperatures and cleaner beaches. Also visit the Temple of the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, which was among the sights taken in by President Obama, above, during his November trip to Thailand.
