What better way to end the summer than with a sun-and-surf competition? A close cousin of surfing, but with more time spent on wet sand before the transition to ocean, skimboarding has been steadily gaining popularity. Skim USA hosts an amateur skimboarding competition at Dewey Beach beginning Saturday. Spectators can watch adventurous athletes fight for the title of amateur East Coast champion. While you're there, make a weekend of it by hitting Rehoboth and Bethany, too. Admission is free for spectators. The competition runs Saturday and Sunday, starting each day at 9 a.m. Dewey Beach is in Sussex County, Del. Go to skimusa.org.
