In March 2011, my friend and I went to Nome, AK, on a mission trip to help at the Iditarod the last great race! The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is 1,049 miles and it covers some of the most extreme and gorgeous terrain anywhere in the world. While cleaning up the dog lots at the end of the race, I took this picture at 9:45pm while the sun set across frozen Norton Sound, an embayment of the Bering Sea. Nome hosts the Bering Sea Ice Golf Classic on Norton Sound and all participation comes with the cautionary note about polar bears in this area. Also, there is a portion of Norton Sound that is actually crossed by the Iditarod race trail. This is an experience and land not to be missed! Since March is coming and Iditarod 2012 will begin on March 3, 2012, I thought this would be a great time to share my picture. While in Nome last year, we were able to meet the 2011 winner, John Baker, while working the mushers breakfast at the end of the race.
