Hotel Monaco Baltimore( Amy Davis, Baltimore Sun / January 21, 2014 )
Why it's romantic: Located in a restored 1906 Beaux-Arts building that once housed the B&O Railroad headquarters, this 13-story boutique hotel in Baltimore's downtown melds historic architectural elements with contemporary decor. Tiffany stained-glass windows, twin marble staircases and glittery chandeliers meld with a rich palette of warm golds, vibrant blues and crimson accented with royal purple and green. Rooms and suites - 202 in all - are both sophisticated and whimsical, with luxurious Frette linens, leather wallpaper, headboards with built-in sconces and lipstick-red lacquer desks.
Whom to take: A significant other. While Monaco has welcomed Hollywood celebs, pro athletes, business travelers and families, the Kimpton property is popular with couples. "We did about three dozen weddings last year," says sales director John A. Tiffey. The new Paris Ballroom has panoramic city views and a dance floor.
