MUSKEGON HEIGHTS (AP) - A man who raped, mutilated and killed a Muskegon County woman 30 years ago and was released after an appeals court ruling has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
Police say they found 55 year old Wayne Lee Stevens of Holton Township inside his car early Thursday in a Muskegon Heights snowbank.
Stevens pleaded not guilty and was released on a bond. He's due in court Feb. 23.
A message seeking comment was left Friday with a lawyer who previously represented Stevens.
Stevens walked free in 2007 after the state Court of Appeals decided he'd served his sentence. He was convicted of second-degree murder in the 1979 slaying of 27-year-old Mary Ann Scharphorn of Muskegon Township.
