A statewide smoking ban is now law, but it's not what many people wanted. Governor Mitch Daniels signed the bill Monday.
It means smoking will be banned in restaurants, hotels, nursing homes, bowling alleys and some workplaces starting July 1st. Hoosiers can still light up in bars, casinos, private clubs and smoking shops. And that isn't sitting well with anti-smoking groups.
Even so, the governor is still satisfied.
"We saw the legislative system at its finest,” said Daniels. “It's there to balance competing interests and find compromises when it's difficult to do."
The governor also signed bills that call for smaller state government and another that aims to cut government costs and increase efficiency.
