Several Indianapolis bars are getting a head start on the upcoming smoking ban.

All bars and taverns in the city must go smoke free by June 1, but several are opting for May 1, if they haven't made the switch already. Broad Ripple bars like Usual Suspects, Old Pros Table and Red Room are already smoke free. The Mineshaft, Rock lobster and Average Joe's have announced that they will go smoke free a month early on May 1.

That's not going to be the case at Broad Ripple Tavern, though. General Mangaer Larry Niehaus said they will wait until the June 1 deadline.

"For us, personally, we've had such a loyal following of people that have been so good to us through the years who do smoke, smoke cigars, so this is kind of our chance to say, 'Hey we're not going to go early. We're going to go long with it,'" Neihaus said.

Though Niehaus said he understands why others are getting a jump on the law, he said he's also found waiting has its benefits.

"Some of the people going smoke free, we've seen some of their smoker business come here," Niehaus said. "We felt a little bit of an impact from that standpoint."

Some smokers are glad they can enjoy it while it lasts.

"It's cool for tonight," said Billy Roush. "But I'm trying to quit smoking so it will be another incentive."

Wendy Allspaw is a non-smoker who comes to Broad Ripple Tavern for a bar pool league. She said she can't wait for the day she can breath easier, whenever it comes.

"I mean I hate the way I smell," Allspaw said. "I'm stuffy the next morning, but I really like my friends and I like to play pool, so as soon as the bars can go smoke free, the better I think."
