The name of a well-known downtown street will remain the same for now. Mayor Greg Ballard will announce Friday that the renaming of Georgia Street is on hold indefinitely.
The city recently requested suggestions for a new name for the three-block stretch between the Indiana Convention Center and Conseco Fieldhouse.
Residents overwhelmingly responded both in favor of and against a name change.
The mayor's communications director said Ballard is listening to the debate.
"Obviously we've had a lot of passions on both sides and right now the mayor has said that let's stop the process of renaming the street for now. We're going to unveil the new vision tomorrow which I think people will get really excited about it, then we'll take some more public input and see how people feel at that point," said Marc Lotter, Office Communications Director.
Along with putting the renaming on hold, the mayor will announce additional plans for the Georgia Street makeover. Already, the street has been transformed from a four-lane street into a two-lane street with a wide pedestrian boardwalk in the middle.
Crews are in the final stages of the $12 million project and should wrap up by November 1.
