A violent head-on collision in Madison County sent three people to area hospitals. It happened just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday at State Road 28 just east of County Road 600 West outside of Elwood. Police say a car traveling westbound crossed the center line and slammed into a minivan traveling in the opposite direction.

The passenger in the van was ejected and transported to Mercy Hospital in Elwood but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the van was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital; no information is available on the extent of his/her injuries. The driver of the car was rushed to Mercy Hospital with head injuries and a fractured wrist. The identities of those involved have not been released.
