UPDATE: A Lawrence swim coach who admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old swimmer will be going to prison.

Chris Wheat was sentenced to two 15-year sentences and one six-year sentence for his conviction on three felony counts. He was also sentenced to five years probation.

With part of the sentence suspended by the judge, Wheat will serve 10 years and be eligible for good behavior sentence reductions.

During the hearing Wednesday in Marion County Judge Carol Orbison's courtroom, a large group of Wheat's former Lawrence swim club members held hands and cried.

One friend of the victim said afterward there will be no forgetting how Wheat tricked and used them for his own pleasure.

"We don't bring this up because it's a sore spot in her life you can still tell. We will talk about it if she wants to talk about it. You can still tell it is hurting her but we try to make her happy and smile and that's all we really can do we can't do anything else," said Leah Christy.

Swim club parent Sarah Christy said now its all clear in hindsight how Wheat calculated the contact to get into all of his swimmer's hearts and minds, especially the ones who had bodies that appeared more developed.

"It was, you know, let's get together for a sleepover to try to make more sexual misconduct acts happen. It was very emotional," said Sarah Christy.

A lawyer representing the victim's family in the Wheat case told Fox59 News that he will soon file a civil lawsuit against the former coach.

This is the same group of lawyers who are already suing in federal court a now disgraced former Westfield and Kokomo swim coach, Brian Hindson.

Hindson, a Carmel resident, was sentenced in April to 33 years in federal prison.
