There wasn't probably any champagne flowing in the locker room after finding out they had just gotten into the playoffs for the seventh straight season. After all, their job for this season isn't done. But one couldn't blame the Indiana Fever for being a bit excited to know they have another chance to grab their first WNBA Championship.
Opportunity, however, may be fading fast for the ladies if they don’t "get'er" done this year and win the championship. Four of their starting five are 30 plus, which doesn't make them old but it does make them a bit vulnerable to continue on in the belief that their chances are never ending.
To me there is something different about this year though. When the Fever made it to the WNBA Finals two years ago and lost to Phoenix, there was the feeling that the Fever were missing something from getting them over the hump. Last year was just a total disappointment in not getting by New York in the first round.
This season there is a different feeling and approach on the road to the championship. From the starting five of Katie, Tamika, Tammy Sutton Brown, Erin and Tangela to the subs, this squad seems to have all the ingredients in place to finally bring a championship basketball banner to Conseco Fieldhouse.
It'll start in September when the Fever, given the nod in preseason talk as the team to beat, will finally have their shot to lay to rest all the doubters and disbelievers. Let’s see if this city can finally become a team of believers.
