Indianapolis—A new learning center named after a longtime Hoosier lawmaker opened Friday at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis. Congressman Andre Carson (D) attended the ceremony at the Julia M. Carson Learning Resource Center.
The center honors his grandmother who represented Indiana's 7th District from 1997 until her death in 2007. Her grandson later took her place. Julia Carson had a big role in getting federal money for Ivy Tech to build the learning center.
"She was someone who clearly wanted to see the community grow and expand, but she really had a deep love and affection for Ivy Tech," said Rep. Carson.
The 229,000 square foot learning center houses the campus library, tutoring services and a community room. It opened to students last month.
