A customer was killed and a store clerk was injured after shootings at a well-known gun store on the west side Monday afternoon.

Police confirmed the suspect, 26-year-old Brian Wayner, died following the shooting at Don's Guns and Galleries, Inc., 3807 Lafayette Rd.

Authorities and EMTs responded to the scene at approximately 12:21 p.m.

When they arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds inside the business.

Business owner Don Davis told Fox59 that Wayner came into the store, rented a gun and shot three boxes worth of ammunition.  When he came to the register to check out, Davis said Wayner shot the clerk twice.

"My (clerk) goes up to collect from him and he shoots my guy twice, bang bang, and my guy kills him. ... He's laying in there on the floor right now," Davis said.

Davis said the clerk's shots fatally wounded Wayner. He told Fox59 the suspect didn't say anything before firing shots at the clerk.

"He did what any of us would do, we'll shoot you back," Davis said.

Other customers inside the store just before the shooting happened said everything appeared normal and that the man was well-dressed and looked to be in his 30s.

"He didn't look like a crazy guy or (anything)," customer Debra Samples said.

Davis said his surveillance cameras caught everything and were shown to police.

Fox59 was told the clerk is expected to be upgraded from critical to serious condition. He is expected to recover.

Anyone with information regarding the shootings is urged to contact IMPD homicide detectives at 317-327-3475.
