Westport Country Playhouse, which has one show (the backstage romp Room Service) left to go on its 2013 season, and has already announced its 2014 season (Coward’s A Song at Twilight, Bergman’s Ibsen-based Nora, Ayckbourn’s Things We Do For Love, Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel and one TBA), will hold its annual fundraising gala on Monday, September 16. Guest of honor is actor/director Phylicia Rashad, who directed A Raisin in the Sun at Westport Country Playhouse in the fall of 2012. Rashad will be elsewhere in Connecticut this coming season, directing August Wilson’s Fences at the Long Wharf Theatre in November/December.

The Westport Gala features performances by a slew of Broadway stars: Christine Andreas, Michael Cerveris, Rebecca Covington, Darius de Haas, Linda Gravatt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Desmond Richardson and Susan Kelechi Watson. That's quite a range: Cerveris has played everyone from The Who's Tommy to Hedwig (of Angry Inch fame) to Juan Peron in Evita. Miranda is the Wesleyan educated auteur of the musical In the Heights. Many of these accomplished New York thespians have also done shows in Westport. Sometimes these guest lists are hints of who might be negotiating to appear in upcoming shows at the theater.

Besides some cabaret-style turns by some of the performers listed above, there'll be scenes from Noah Racey's celebration of American dance culture Pulse.

The gala is accompanied by a big fundraising auction, with items ranging from tickets to trips.
