On Sunday evening, after the snow had somewhat settled and some of the sidewalks had been cleared, hundreds of generous local artsy types descended upon Hartford ArtSpace Gallery for a dynamic and funky exhibit with a cause.
Tao LaBossiere is in need of open heart surgery. Unfortunately for Tao, his insurance leaves a $45,000 deficit for the procedure which he will have to cover on his own. Fortunately for him, he has an incredibly supportive and creative spouse, Amy, who has been spearheading a massive fundraising in his honor at ArtSpace. In compliment to Amy’s efforts, the local artistic community has joined together with hundreds of paintings, sketches and diverse sculptural pieces offered for sale, with 20% or more of the proceeds going to Tao’s open heart surgery fund. The support is well deserved, as Tao has volunteered his own time for years to help open and maintain exhibits at ArtSpace and support the local community. Collectively, the fundraising effort for Tao is “Art for the Open Heart,” and it will be continuing until Friday.
The grand opening of the gallery featured food from Salute, Ginza, and Fire and Spice – rounded off by some kick ass home-made cupcakes and goodies – as well as a live gong performance and music spun by DJ John Eastman. Over forty-seven pieces of art were purchased during the opening evening, but there are still plenty for sale, and the majority of the exhibit is intact for viewing. Those interested in attending can stop by Thursday, February 14th, from 5-7 pm, or Friday, February 15th, for the Potluck Closing Party from 6-9 pm. Both events are free, although attendees are encouraged to bring a dish or a bottle to share to the potluck. Discounted parking is also available at Union Street Parking Lot.
