Arch Street Tavern: Rick Bober. (April 2, 2012)

Anyone who’s been following the music scene in Hartford will know that this is the story of a small place coming out of nowhere to dust the competition. Arch Street Tavern is a venerable establishment, but it’s only recently become known as the place to see live music in town. It’s done it in a big way. And quick. Rick Bober is the production and nightlife manager for the venue, and he deserves a ton of the credit. Bober came to Arch Street after working at the Webster Theater. He helped transform the space to make it a great room to hear and play music in. “There was no PA, there was no stage,” says Bober of the state of things when he came on board at Arch Street. And you could say that what Bober and owner Jerry Collins have done there mirrors what the city is aiming to do in the area. “We are really the flagship of what Hartford’s trying to do with Front Street,” says Bober. “I’m so excited to be part of helping out Hartford and bringing a different style of music than what you see on the other side of town. We don’t do cover bands, we don’t do typical top-40 DJs.” One thing they do do is to team up with Nectar's, a highly regarded venue with spots in Burlington, Vt. and Martha’s Vineyard. Now national touring acts are stopping in Hartford. And Bober’s idea of growing the music scene here is one that involves cultivating local acts as well. The venue also works on monthly events with Chip's Local Band Show -- Live and Local. “I think honestly this is one of the best pools of local bands we’ve had here, ever,” says Bober. Look for a show featuring one of the big acts from the upcoming Gathering of the Vibes.
