A good college radio station should foster relationships with the community while training students to be superb DJs. WNHU at the University of New Haven does just that. General manager Bryan Lane says, "The reason that some of the shows continue to be healthy and exist is because they have a fervent listenership." WNHU allows students to hone their DJ skills on the streaming-only Charger Radio before stepping up to the big plates. "I think there was a bridge that needed to be in there somewhere. Just throwing them on to a station that can reach 400,000 people was really intimidating to some students," says Lane. New shows on the horizon for the station are a comedy show based on SPIN magazine's list of the greatest comedy albums of all time on Tuesday nights; a show of old monster and thriller radio shows on Friday nights; and a show called "Wood Songs," that navigates the country/folk/blues overlap. And this summer, the studio will be rebuilt to help accommodate live, in-studio performances.
