If Maria Alipio, 49 years old, followed the rules, she would have had just a minor traffic ticket or even a warning. Instead- she's in jail and charged with Attempted Assault on a Police Officer, Interfering with Police, Reckless Driving, Traveling Unreasonably Fast, Failure to Obey an Officer's Signal, Larceny and Engaging in a Pursuit. Her problems began in Vernon, where police stopped Alipio shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday.

"The female operator stopped and was very cooperative initially and told the officer she was late to work and it was her first day on the job and she couldn't be late," said Detective James Grady of the Vernon Police Department.

Police said she was so insistent on being on time that after she gave the officer her driver's license, she took off!

"Two officers standing in the road with other traffic violators pulled over and tried to stop her and she narrowly missed them as she drove at them," said Grady.

And police said Alipio kept going!

But it wasn't long before a South Windsor cop spotted her screeching into the parking lot at the Christmas Tree Shops in Manchester. But the chase didn't end there. Police said Alipio took her license plate off and put it in her bag and then disappeared into some nearby woods. But she couldn't hide and police eventually arrested her.

"She turned a routine traffic stop into a serious offense," said Grady.
