Former Mayor Mike Peters was discharged from Hartford Hospital Wednesday night and is now in a rehabilitation facility, his family said Thursday.

Just over two weeks after Peters underwent a liver transplant, he was doing well enough to leave the hospital, begin physical therapy, and work on his strength.

"He's very weak, but he's getting better all the time," said his sister, Geraldine Sullivan. "Every day is a little improvement."

Sullivan said she did not know how long he would be in the facility which she said the family would prefer not to name.

"He really appreciates the well wishes and kind thoughts of so many people," Sullivan said.

Peters, 59, was operated on Oct. 7. His liver was failing because of cirrhosis.
