UPDATE

The Connecticut State Police has made a preliminary determination that the fire was the result of arson.

----

Fire officials are investigating the cause of a structure fire in East Haddam near the former Frank Davis Sunrise Resort.

At 1:18 a.m., Fire crews responded to Echo Farm Road in East Haddam for a structure fire. When crews arrived, they found two large abandoned buildings in flames at the resort which were used to story canoes.  The property is owned by the State of Connecticut.

The Frank Davis property was purchased recently by the state of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.

One building was completely destroyed and the second building sustained heavy damage. The cause is still under investigation by the state police fire marshal's office.

You can view photos of the buildings prior to the fire in the photo gallery to the right.

The two structures that burned were in the 300 acre Machimoodus State Park which the DEP purchased in 1998 for open space.  More recently the the state purchased the former Sunrise Resort immediately adjacent to the state park.

The DEP has been in the process of coming up with a master plan with the two combined as one.  One of the buildings is described as a looking like a Bavarian Beer hall and was only a 2 story shell of a building with no interior.  The second building about 30 feet away that was heavily damaged was an historic home with parts built in the 1700's.

A private home off the property about 55 feet away received minor exterior damage.

The DEP says there was no electricity in the buildings.  The fire does not impact the DEP 's plans pursuing a plan for the properties that may included hiking, a family campground, rv camping, trails, horseback riding.  The DEP would've  looked at the larger building possibly for a nature center or visitors center or business office.  The home probably would not have been usable because of small rooms & narrow hallways and the difficulty it would be to make handicapped accessible.
