SOUTH BEND — A truck driver, who reportedly sat dead in his idling cab for nearly a day, was found Wednesday by police along the St. Joseph Valley Parkway.

According to police reports, 63-year-old Richard Jacobs, of Star City, was found dead in the cab of his semi truck, which was stopped on the shoulder of the southbound ramp that connects U.S. 20 to U.S. 31 on South Bend’s south side.

Police said Jacobs had a road atlas in his hands, which led them to believe he had pulled his truck off the road to read the map. No evidence suggested foul play, and a coroner surmised Jacobs, who had a history of medical problems, died of a heart attack.

Police say a caller on Wednesday alerted them to the truck parked on the side of the road and said it had first been spotted about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. Police arrived at the truck about 12:30 p.m. and reported finding Jacobs dead.
