After months of speculation, guesswork and analysis of tweeted photos, Michael Vick confirms that he and his family have a dog, which he says is "well cared for and loved as a member of our family."

Vick - the Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback from Newport News - saw his life and career crash around him when he went to federal prison on charges related to a dogfighting ring that he helped finance out of his property in Surry County.

Since his release from prison, Vick has worked hard - and largely successfully - to revive his career and revamp his image, aligning himself closely with the Humane Society of the United States. In a statement, he said it was a chance to teach his children to love all creatures, and "an opportunity to break the cycle" that began with his introduction to dogfighting as a youth.

"I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change."
