Hershey, Dauphin County—The HERSHEY BEARS, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, have announced that the team will oppose the Adirondack Phantoms in the Outdoor Classic at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park on Friday, January 6, 2012. The announcement was made by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.
As a part of the week-long festivities surrounding the 2012 NHL Winter Classic, which will feature the Philadelphia Flyers hosting the New York Rangers, the BEARS will skate outdoors in the elements for the first time in the team’s 74-year history.
“We are excited to compete in a battle of two rivals in the first AHL game to be included as part of Winter Classic week,” Yingst said. “We are also looking forward to this game adding itself into the long history of the HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club.”
The BEARS and Phantoms will each wear special jerseys that will represent the significance of the Outdoor Classic. The contest will also be the third outdoor game involving American Hockey League teams. The Syracuse Crunch hosted the Binghamton Senators in the Mirabito Outdoor Classic in front of 21,508 fans at the New York State Fairgrounds on February 20, 2010, while a record 21,673 fans watched the Connecticut Whale battle the Providence Bruins in the Whale Bowl on February 19, 2011 at East Hartford’s Rentschler Field.
An announcement on the purchase of tickets for the Outdoor Classic is expected in the near future.
