State troopers are investigating a suspect in the theft of a fire engine stolen from the Jewett City Volunteer Fire Dept. early Thursday.

The 1992 Sparton Marion fire truck, worth an estimated $700,000, was recovered undamaged and abandoned behind a Canterbury business shortly after it was reported missing at 12:30 a.m.

A male subject was located on foot a short distance from the truck's location. He admitted to troopers that he broke into the fire station, stole the truck and took it for a "joy ride."

Police say that the suspect appeared to be in need of a medical evaluation, and was transported to W.W. Backus Hospital in Norwich for an emergency examination.

Investigation revealed that no other people were involved in the theft. The criminal investigation is continuing and police anticipate an arrest in this case.
