It's official. Yankee catcher Jorge Posada has retired. The 5 time world champ announced he's calling it quits during a news conference at the stadium with teammates Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, C.C. Sabathia and others along with members of the organization and fans standing by. In an emotional moment Posada told the crowd " I could never wear another uniform.

Being a part of 7 world series, winning 5 rings, is more than I dreamed of. It's priceless. I will forever be a Yankee."

And he will be forever loved by Yankee fans. Jorge Posada, flanked by his wife and two children looked back on his career, talking about his 17 seasons in pinstripes and what they mean to him. With tears in his eyes he heaped thanks on the fans and organization. "I also want to thank my teammates." he said "Especially Derek Jeter who helped me stay positive and focused. Thank you buddy. Breaking down he went on to say "Hopefully you won't miss me too much." Speaking of the 5 World Series Championship trophies perched on a nearby table he said " Mariano we wouldn't have any of those without you."

But the common strain running throughout the announcement was family, his family and the Yankee family. Yankee hero Thurman Munson's widow Dianna tugged at the heart speaking of how she lost interest in baseball after her husband died in a plane crash. She said meeting Jorge reignited her love of baseball. " Jorge is the one. He and Thurman would have been best buds. He has the it factor. Yankee fans are sad today as we all are.. Diana Munson said "I know he'll go on to do wonderful things. I am honored to have loved two Yankee catchers in my life."

The five time world champ also had high praise for his family saying to wife Laura, " You have been my rock and my strength and Jorge Jr. and Paulina you always make me smile! I love you."

Posada says he has no immediate plans to pursue coaching or continue in baseball in some other capacity. He says for now he plans to do something he has never done before. Spend a summer enjoying his wife and kids.
