One million dollars--that's the grand prize up for grabs at this year's 45th Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest on March 25-27, 2012, in Orlando, Florida. Several contestants participating to win all of that "dough" are from our area.
Three of them will showcase the recipes that have gotten them this far. They were:
Curried Soup with Cheese-Filled Naan Bio: Commuting to Long Island, N.Y., on the weekends, KEITH HENN teaches horticulture at the Community College of Baltimore County, Md. He's proud that "as a teacher, I have helped many people start careers and become successful." Henn was instrumental in starting the campus community garden, which donates all produce to local food banks: "No awards, just satisfaction." Henn memorably prepared his contest recipe after Hurricane Irene. "I was home and we had spent all day cleaning up the mess, so we were hungry, but no one felt like cooking a big meal," he says.
DINAH SURH (Staten Island, N.Y.) Recipe: Meatball Minestrone Bake Bio: With her hectic schedule, DINAH SURH needed an easy-to-prepare dinner for her family of four. She poured minestrone soup, a family favorite, in the bottom of a baking dish and added her specialty meatballs with cheese and flavored crescent strips. Voila, a Sunday dinner was born and later, a Bake-Off® Contest entry. "My daughter said that she didn't even mind the vegetables," Dinah says. "That was a first!" Beyond her home kitchen, Dinah strives to teach patients at her New York City hospital how to eat right, exercise and monitor their health.
AMY SIEGEL (Clifton, N.J.) Recipe: Strawberry Swirl-Peanut Butter-Brownie Cupcakes Bio: AMY SIEGEL and her husband are busy raising four kids age 7 and under which could be why she had a lunchbox favorite on the brain. For her Bake-Off® Contest recipe, "I thought it would be interesting to riff on the peanut butter and jelly theme," Amy says. "I swirled some Smucker's strawberry jam always on hand in my house into the frosting, and a cupcake was born!" She found inspiration in the cupcake craze that has swept the nation the past few years, she says, and enjoyed the challenge of creating flavor combinations beyond plain chocolate and vanilla.
The other two local contestants are:
KATHY MATULEWICZ (Clifton, N.J.) o Recipe: Coconut-Almond Doughnut Pop-ems
ANTOINETTE LEAL (Ridgefield, C.T.) o Recipe: White Chocolate and Apple-Cinnamon Roll Bread Pudding
