BROOKLYN (PIX11)—Somber faces matched an overcast day as family, friends and colleagues filed into the Grace Funeral Chapels in Brooklyn to pay their respects to fallen NYPD officer Kevin Jessup.
Jessup, 25, who was inspired to join the New York Police Department because of the events of 9/11, was killed Sunday on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
Jessup was rear ended on the Southern State Parkway near Bethpage Parkway by Jonathan Lopez early Sunday morning, police said. The alleged drunk driver also struck another vehicle.
Lopez , 20, of East Meadow has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and tow counts of assault. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
Jessup was assigned to the 106th Precinct in Ozone Park and was returning from a celebratory dinner for his girlfriend's 30th birthday on September 11 when Lopez hit their car according to police. Their car reportedly hit a guardrail, flipped over and rolled into a wooded area.
The girlfriend allegedly crawled out of the car and managed to get to the parkway to wave down help. She and the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. Jessup suffered severe head trauma and lost too much blood to be saved, according to reports.
Jessup who grew up in Brooklyn will be laid to rest at the Plain Lawn Cemetery in Hicksville on Friday following a memorial service at the funeral home at 9:30am.
