PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN (WPIX)—It has happened yet again - another New York City school teacher has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing a student.
Police arrested a 49-year-old gym teacher at the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment in Prospect Heights on charges of inappropriately touching a 16-year-old female student on her buttocks.
The teacher had been a staff member at the school since 2006; since the arrest, he has been reassigned.
Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott released a statement saying: "We have been crystal clear about the consequences for this kind of behavior. A staff member who violates the trust of our students and families does not deserve to work in our schools -- period. Anyone who does will be removed and we will do everything in our power to make sure they never work here again."
This has been the 15th arrest of a New York City school employee so far this year, compared with 13 for all of 2011.
This teacher has no criminal record, and according to the Department of Education, he has never been the subject of an investigation before.
