September is National Head Lice Awareness month, in recognition of the time of year when reported cases of lice infestation soar as children leave summer camp and head back to school. There are few things more distressing to a parent then getting a call from the school nurse reporting that your child has head lice.
Licenders is a professional service company that specializes in the safe screening and effective removal of head lice, using 100% natural products. Licenders has been helping families, schools, camps and physicians get rid of head lice for more than 15 years.
How is head lice spread?
- Anyone who comes in close contact, espADecially head-to-head contact, with someone who already has head lice is at greatest risk. It can also be acquired from contact with clothing (such as hats, scarves, and coats) or other personal items (such as brushes or towels) that belong to an infested person.
- Preschool and elementary age children (ages 3-11) and their families are infested most often.
How can you avoid catching head lice?
- Head lice have nothing to do with hygiene (lice actually feed easier off squeaky clean heads), and sometimes you can do everything right and your family can still end up with lice! You should definitely educate your child as to how head lice spread.
How do you detect it?
- The main symptom is an itchy head, but sometimes a person can have head lice and not even know it! In most cases it's discovered in a child after a nurse performs a lice screening or if you notice your child constantly scratching.
How do you treat it?
Option 1 Do it yourself. There are a number of treatment options available in the local pharmacy or online. We do caution against the old-school lice treatments which have been around a long time. They contain a chemical pesticide called Permethrin, which is no longer effective in killing the bug. Instead, choose a natural treatment. There are many on the market, and they work in different ways. Our product kills the bugs by suffocating them with enzymes. However, once you have killed the bugs, it is still necessary to comb out the hair with a special very fine tooth comb to get out the eggs, or nits, because if you don't, they will hatch and the problem will start all over again.
Option 2 Go to a service provider who will handle the entire process for you, either in a salon, as we have in Manhattan, or in your own home. These trained professionals simplify the process by doing the treatments and the comb out, making the process worry-free for you and your child. The most revolutionary new way to kill head lice and their eggs is the LouseBuster device, which uses only controlled heated air to wipe out head lice and their eggs safely and effectively. Licenders has the exclusive rights to use the device in Manhattan.
