A person close to Harold Ford Jr. says the former Tennessee congressman won't run against Kirsten Gillibrand (JIL'-uh-brand) for U.S. Senate in New York's Democratic primary.

The person said Ford would explain the reasons for his decision in an op-ed in Tuesday editions of The New York Times. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced yet.

Ford has spent the past seven weeks gauging support for a possible Democratic primary challenge to Gillibrand.
